Anniversary of Russia’s war of aggression: Assistance for Ukraine and security for Germany

Since 24 February 2022, Russia’s war against Ukraine has brought extraordinary suffering to the Ukrainian people. Russian bombs continue to destroy towns and villages, killing people and tearing families apart.

And they are forcing many Ukrainians to leave their homes: Russia’s war of aggression has triggered the largest wave of refugees in Europe since the Second World War.

Since the war began, Germany has taken in and provided for more than one million Ukrainian refugees. This extraordinary joint effort of government and society has saved many lives, and it has shown a great deal of solidarity with Ukraine.

However, Russia’s war of aggression has also changed the security situation in Germany. The Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community has significantly ramped up protective measures in response to cyber attacks, disinformation campaigns and potential sabotage of critical infrastructure.

“We will continue to supply aid where our help is urgently needed. We are helping the Ukrainian fire service, the emergency medical services and civil protection forces. Germany’s Federal Agency for Technical Relief has so far organised nearly 600 aid transports – the largest logistical operation in its history.”
