Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser visited Colombia as part of her efforts to fight international organised drug trafficking

During the last stop of her tour of South America, Federal Minister of the Interior and Community Nancy Faeser met with Colombia’s Minister of Defence Iván Velásquez Gómez, who is also in charge of Colombia's National Police. The ministers met to discuss cooperation in combating international drug trafficking. Federal Minister Faeser stressed: "We need new coalitions, especially with such an important partner like Colombia."

Working together to fight drug-related crime

Organised crime poses a major challenge, both at national and international level. In particular in the field of drug-related crime, organised crime groups operate on an international level. The transnational structures of organised crime networks can only be permanently destroyed by working together with international partners. The Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community therefore aims to intensify cooperation on a broad scale with the South American countries where drugs are produced and transported. The goal is to establish direct operational cooperation between South American and German police authorities.

Previous stops in South America

Before visiting Colombia, Federal Minister Faeser had travelled to Brazil, Peru and Ecuador. Together with Brazil’s Minister of Justice and Public Security, she signed a declaration of intent on increased police cooperation to combat organised crime and drug trafficking. In Peru, Minister Faeser and her counterpart also signed a declaration of intent, aiming at opening negotiations about a security agreement between Germany and Peru.
