The UK Withdrawal Agreement enters into force on 1 February 2020. Nothing will change for citizens and businesses until the end of the transition period on 31 December 2020.

The UK Withdrawal Agreement enters into force on 1 February 2020 after being signed by the UK and the European Union (EU).

This means that there will be an orderly withdrawal and that nothing will change for citizens and businesses for the time being. The Withdrawal Agreement provides for a transition period until 31 December 2020. During this time, the United Kingdom will continue to be treated as an EU member state.

  • EU freedom of movement regulations will continue to apply during the transition period. British and Union citizens can continue to move freely, live, work and study within the EU and the United Kingdom as before.
  • British citizens continue to have the right to enter Germany. Above all, there will be no change in the process at passport control for British citizens.
  • During the transition period, there will be no change for British citizens wishing to take on German citizenship.

The EU and the United Kingdom will use the transition period to agree on a new partnership for the future. In this context, the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community is making every effort to ensure that, in the interest of the security of our citizens, the close cooperation among security authorities can be continued.
