The Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community hosted a conference on the potential of cross-border regional cooperation on 13 September 2019.

No other country in Europe has as many neighbours as Germany. Along its borders, common areas have long since developed where citizens from different regions and countries interact and live together. However, while there are common economic and cultural interests on both sides of the border, they are often subject to different framework conditions in the different countries.

Cross-border cooperation aims to better align these framework conditions and to reduce the hurdles hampering regional cooperation. People living in poorer border regions are particularly likely to benefit from better cooperation across national borders. As part of its community policy, the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community supports regional cross-border cooperation initiatives.

Conference participants included Christian Pegel, Minister for Energy, Infrastructure and Digitalization of the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, and Dr Mark Speich, State Secretary for Federal, European and International Affairs of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.
