Major Sport Events

Hosting major sport events gives Germany the opportunity to show that it welcomes guests from all over the world. The 2006 World Cup created lasting memories of a magical summer of football, and more recent events such as the 2022 European Championships, the Special Olympics World Games in 2023 and the 2024 UEFA EURO men’s European Football Championship have been memorable as well. These events have the power to project a positive image to the world and have a noticeable impact at home. They effectively promote values such as diversity, participation and inclusion and bring them to life. They can also inspire enthusiasm for our nation and the values of sport.

National strategy for major sporting events

Hosting major sporting events in Germany with federal financial support should provide a significant boost to organised sport in Germany, should advance national and international sustainability objectives, and should benefit society. For that reason, the Federal Government worked with organised sport and a large number of other stakeholders to develop a national strategy for major sporting events. The strategy is intended to maximise the potential benefits such events offer for sport and society more systematically and to apply resources efficiently.

Germany as host country for major sporting events

Germany has demonstrated again and again that it is an excellent host: for example at the 2022 European Championships in Munich and the 2023 Special Olympics World Games in Berlin, which highlighted the power of inclusion. UEFA EURO 2024™ put men’s football in the spotlight and will be followed this year by the Rhine-Ruhr FISU World University Games, the world’s largest multi-sport event after the Olympics. So it is clear: Germany knows how to host major sporting events!

A new bid to host the Olympics

And Germany is ready for more: the Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community supports the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB) in the strategic process of bidding to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Staging the world’s biggest sporting event of international understanding is a shared goal and national undertaking. It is important to make sure that both the bid and the actual event abide by the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and must score high marks above all for sustainability, participation and the advancement of sport.
