Nationality

Nationality law is a central aspect of the constitutional order. Nationality determines who belongs to the community of German citizens, which is one of the elements which constitutes a state. Membership in this community grants one of the most important rights: the right to participate in the exercise of state authority by means of elections and voting. Nationality is therefore the legal link which connects citizens to their state. A citizen is therefore a person belonging to a certain country.
